Selangor Justices of Peace (JP) Council will continue offering free document certification services to ease the financial burden on local communities.

Newly elected president Tan Sri Jason Goh emphasised the council’s renewed commitment to accessible public services and civic engagement statewide.

“The witnessing and certification of documents are provided completely free of charge,” he said.

Highlighting the royal directive behind the initiative, Goh said Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah expected all JPs to remain active, closely engage with the public and dedicate themselves to serving the people.

JPs typically authenticate documents as true copies of the originals by affixing their official signature and stamp.

Eligible documents include passports, identity cards, birth certificates, utility bills, academic transcripts or school records.

According to Goh, the Petaling JP service desk currently assisted between five and seven individuals daily on professional guidance and document certification.

“Over the past couple of years, we have seen an increasing number of people coming forward to have documents related to school matters certified.”

He added that discussions were ongoing to allow JPs to have a place in local council buildings to serve the people effectively.

“We want to reach out to the people.

“The JP council is fully prepared to collaborate with mosques, churches and residents’ associations to organise neighbourhood outreach sessions, making it easier and more convenient for residents to access document certification services.

“We are willing to extend it to other places,” he added.

Goh, a businessman who has been a JP since 1996, said people should make an appointment prior to visiting the JP service desk to avoid disappointment.

On another note, Goh said the council was eagerly awaiting the official appointment of Selangor JPs as court mediators to resolve disputes outside of litigation.

“Mediation not only lightens the burden on the courts but also restores harmony within communities.

“We have four JPs who completed a mediation course in Kuala Lumpur about three years ago, and all are fully capable.”

On the timeline for these appointments, Goh estimated that “it could come about in three to five months’ time”.

He further noted that JPs would be effective in conducting pro bono court-annexed mediation to help opposing parties reach amicable settlements.

Selangor JP council honorary secretary Johnson Tee said being a JP was a voluntary public service.

“We are deeply mindful that our appointment is a privilege bestowed upon us by the Sultan of Selangor,” he said.

Selangor JP council vice-president Datuk Steven Tee said the Klang service desk has moved to Bangunan Sultan Alam Shah, Jalan Perbandaran in Shah Alam.
