Public awareness must be raised over the widespread misuse of facilities designated for persons with disabilities (OKU), says Datuk Salbiah Mohamed.

The Perak women, family, social welfare, cooperatives and entrepreneur development committee chairman expressed concern over individuals who continue to occupy spaces reserved for the disabled, particularly dedicated parking spots.

“We are asking people to understand why these facilities are provided,” she told reporters after the state Disabled Persons Awareness Month in Ipoh, Perak.

Salbiah said designated OKU parking spaces were important for the community as having to park farther away would create difficulties for them.

“It is important for us to be aware and considerate, not only towards parents with OKU and children, but also the OKU community as a whole,” she said.

“That is why this awareness month is held to create greater awareness,” she said.
