RECYCLABLE collections at the Trash for Cash Hub 3R @ Taman Serina in Sungai Pinang has increased by 56.5%.

The programme collected 287.65kg on Aug 30, compared with 183.79kg the previous week on Aug 23.

Used cooking oil collection also nearly doubled, with 59.2kg collected compared with 30kg recorded previously.

The used cooking oil was purchased at RM3 per kg.

Organised by the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) Municipal Services Department in collaboration with strategic partners Riiicycle and Tanjung Synergy, the drive collected recyclable materials including plastic bottles, paper, cardboard and aluminium cans.

The incentive was supported and funded by MBPP councillors Datuk Abdul Razak Abdul Rahman, Rohaizat Hamid, Chan Soon Aun, David Chen Wooi Teong and Muhamad Nayim Othuman Mydin.

It aimed to encourage the public to separate waste at source and make recycling part of their daily routine.

The drive also raised awareness on the importance of waste separation, the proper handling of recyclable materials and the role individuals can play in reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills.

Meanwhile, the programme also expanded to textile collection where 60kg of textiles were collected.

E-waste collected included six mobile phones, four laptops, a computer CPU and two monitors.

Participants bringing more than 5kg of recyclable materials, including used cooking oil, were eligible to receive free groceries such as instant noodles and cooking oil.

MBPP said the response reflected growing public awareness of responsible waste management, with participants coming from across Penang and some returning for a second time.
