THE SPIRIT of patriotism and community unity shone at the Lengkok Golf SS7 Kelana Jaya community’s Merdeka Month celebration, held in the neighbourhood in Petaling Jaya, Selangor.
The event drew a crowd of about 400 residents for a day of festivities, friendly competition and community milestones.
Organised by the Lengkok Golf SS7 Kawasan Rukun Tetangga (KRT), the event was held to offer residents a dedicated platform to foster deeper neighbourhood bonds.
Funded through residents’ contributions, the celebration included a multi-cultural feast featuring chicken satay, nasi lemak, chapati, vadai and takoyaki.
Showcasing the neighbourhood’s generous spirit, 45 households sponsored 114 lucky draw prizes.
In a landmark moment for the over 40-year-old neighbourhood, the event featured its first open-air film screening at its playground, organised by the Information Department and National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas).
Lengkok Golf SS7 Kelana Jaya KRT chairman Datuk Lamien Sawiyo said the screening of Babah, a movie that won Best Film at the 34th Malaysia Film Festival last year, was made possible following approval from the Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Abdul Halim Hamzah.
The gathering also served as a farewell ceremony to honour former Petaling Jaya mayor Datuk Mohamad Zahri Samingon and deputy mayor Aznan Hassan.
While Mohamad Zahri is now Human Resources Department director-general, Aznan recently retired after over 30 years of public service.
In his speech, Lamien praised both men for their unwavering support in upgrading local street lighting and park amenities, as well as improving the neighbourhood’s traffic management, safety and cleanliness.
He highlighted Aznan’s instrumental role in advancing the neighborhood’s Denai Hijau project along a monsoon drain reserve at Jalan SS7/9.
It aimed to upgrade the area into a safe and user-friendly community recreational space by building a 400m-long pedestrian path and jogging track, installing benches and lighting, and improving safety elements while maintaining the natural ecosystem and existing biodiversity habitats.
It was previously reported that the project by MBPJ was expected to be completed in October.
Lamien also acknowledged the continuous support of MBPJ Zone 22 councillor Mohamed Hamka Mohamed Jumah and the volunteers who contributed their time, energy and resources to organising the event.
The Lengkok Golf SS7 Kelana Jaya Merdeka Month celebration featured a diverse lineup of activities.
Children joined a colouring contest, while youths competed in penalty kick and netball.
The event also promoted health and sustainability through a seated exercise session, a used cooking oil recycling drive as well as complimentary health screenings provided by medical students of Lincoln University College.
