SHAH ALAM: Selangor has requested RM20mil from the Federal Government to restore the historic Istana Bandar in Jugra, Kuala Langat, built in 1899 by the fifth Sultan of Selangor.
State housing and culture committee chairman Datuk Borhan Aman Shah said the proposal was submitted to the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry (Motac) via the Selangor Malay Customs and Heritage Corporation (Padat).
He disclosed this during his closing speech at the Selangor State Assembly sitting in Shah Alam.
"The total requested cost of RM20mil includes restoration of the roof, façade, wooden floors, windows and brick walls. It will also include work throughout the building, while retaining its original design in accordance with its status as a national heritage site,” said Borhan.
He said Padat is serious about reviving Istana Bandar so that present and future generations can continue to appreciate it.
“Among the initiatives to be considered is retelling the history of Istana Bandar and the Selangor Sultanate, including the functions of the palace’s rooms, the uniqueness of its architecture, and the history of Jugra as one of the important areas in the development of Selangor’s administration.
“This may also include heritage exhibitions and interpretation, educational programmes, arts and cultural programmes, and activities involving artists, craftspeople and the local community,” said Borhan.
He noted that integrating Istana Bandar into the Heritage Jugra Trail will further position Jugra as a key historical and cultural destination.
