For more than three decades, hundreds of residents in Taman Desa Seroja, Kajang, Selangor, have lived in fear of recurring floods.
Relief is finally in sight following a commitment by authorities to build a dedicated flood retention pond to resolve the area’s chronic drainage issues.
Kajang assemblyman David Cheong, who led a site visit last week alongside representatives from various government agencies, said Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj), Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) and Air Selangor came together to assess the root causes of flooding before finalising designs and implementation plan for the proposed pond.
“During the site visit, the local authority formally committed to constructing a dedicated flood retention pond as a long-term solution to the area’s chronic drainage issues.”
Cheong, who was making his third engagement on the issue, first visited the affected neighbourhood last March to assess conditions on the ground.
This was followed by a comprehensive coordination meeting in May with MPKj and the relevant agencies to develop a structured technical solution.
“The latest development represents a significant breakthrough for the local community.
“During the meeting, TNB expressed its commitment to taking the necessary action at the site without delay.
“The utility company’s cooperation is expected to resolve a critical technical obstacle that has prevented drainage upgrade works from moving forward for decades,” he said in a press statement.
Cheong added that his office would closely monitor the progress of the retention pond project to ensure construction would proceed smoothly.
“The retention pond will play a vital role in safeguarding the safety and quality of life of Taman Desa Seroja residents, while strengthening the community’s resilience against future flooding,” he added.
