THE kebaya is a living tapestry of stories, identity and cultural expression woven across generations.

The exhibition also features a ‘Stories of the Kebaya’ segment that explores the personal narratives of eight individuals from diverse communities.

This rich legacy takes centre stage in “Kebaya Kita: Antara Ceritera, Identiti dan Ekspresi”, an exhibition at Muzium Seni Asia in Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, which runs until Aug 20.

The interpretive panels showcase the craftsmanship and evolution of the kebaya through traditional techniques such as the butterfly cut, ‘ketuk lubang’ and ‘kerawang’ embroidery.

The exhibition invites visitors to look beyond the elegance of the traditional attire and discover the personal narratives, memories and meanings that have shaped its place in the region’s cultural landscape.

The exhibition is ongoing at Muzium Seni Asia until Aug 20.

At the heart of the exhibition is the “Ceritera” segment, which features eight individuals from diverse ethnic, cultural and generational backgrounds.

Through photographs, personal reflections and lived experiences, they share how the kebaya has accompanied them through significant moments in life, from family traditions and celebrations to personal expressions of identity.

The exhibition also explores how the kebaya remains relevant today through the perspectives of fashion designers, academics, cultural advocates and students.
