Award-winning Japanese blend makes its debut

A new Japanese whisky celebrating the cultural philosophy of time and reinvention has made its debut in the Malaysian spirits scene.

Brought to the local market by House of Suntory, the founding house of Japanese whisky, Toki Suntory Whisky blends components from the renowned Hakushu, Yamazaki and Chita distilleries to emphasise approachability without compromise.

According to the company’s press statement, the name “Toki” is the Japanese word for “time”, reflecting a cultural philosophy deeply rooted in Japan that respects tradition while pushing for innovation.

This duality defines House of Suntory’s approach to whiskymaking.

Led by Shinji Fukuyo, Toki showcases a deliberate rethinking of traditional blending hierarchies by giving each component equal importance in shaping the final liquid.

Traditionally, grain whisky plays a supporting role within blends, but in Toki, it is elevated as an equal expression of character alongside the other three whiskies.

Hakushu American white oak cask malt whisky brings freshness, soft mellowness and vibrant green apple notes, while Chita heavy-type grain whisky contributes a clean structure, gentle sweetness and vanilla-like smoothness.

These are harmonised with select Yamazaki malt whiskies, adding depth, roundness and layered complexity.

Together, they create a vivid, balanced and silky blend that reflects Suntory’s philosophy of harmony (wa), where seemingly contrasting elements are brought into seamless alignment.

The blend embodies the heritage and craftsmanship of authentic Japanese whisky, as it is fully distilled, matured and bottled in Japan in accordance with Japan Spirits & Liqueurs Makers Association (JSLMA) standards.

It was awarded Gold at the 2026 International Spirits Challenge.

The liquid’s smoothness allows for exceptional versatility, meaning it can be enjoyed neat, on the rocks, as a highball or mixed into a cocktail.

“Malaysia has a strong and growing appreciation for premium spirits, with whisky increasingly enjoyed on social and shared occasions,” said Suntory Global Spirits South-East Asia marketing director Roger Chen.

“Toki brings a modern expression of Japanese whisky craftsmanship – refined, versatile and approachable.

“It carries the heritage of House of Suntory, while inviting a new generation of drinkers in Malaysia to experience Japanese whisky in a more expressive and social way.”

To mark its arrival, House of Suntory introduced “Toki Time” at An Livehouse KL.

The launch brought together Japanese whisky culture, music and contemporary social rituals in a setting that reflects Toki’s philosophy of old meeting new.

“A truly great whisky retains its integrity and character in every serve, regardless of how it is enjoyed,” said Malaysia Suntory Brand Ambassador Darwin Ng.

“Toki is defined by its subtle complexity and balance, with enough depth to be enjoyed neat or on the rocks.

“Its versatility allows it to adapt across occasions while retaining its identity,” he said.

Toki Suntory Whisky is available at selected premium bars nationwide as well as retailers and online platforms.
