Furry pundits bring football fun, highlight animal welfare

The SPCA Selangor campaign is aimed at showcasing the animals in their shelter and finding them a forever home.

WANTON the rescue cat may not read match statistics or study team formations, but its World Cup prediction has already hit the back of the net.

The SPCA Selangor cat picked Morocco to beat Canada on July 2, two days before the teams met on July 4.

Morocco then went on to win 3-0, giving Wanton a perfect start as the first furry pundit featured under the “Furry Forecast” campaign.

The lighthearted campaign features 16 rescued cats and dogs from SPCA Selangor, which took turns choosing their favoured teams during the World Cup knockout rounds.

Their forecasts are being shared on social media as a fun way for football supporters and animal lovers to follow the tournament.

For Wanton, the first task was choosing between Morocco and Canada.

The feline forecaster’s pick proved spot-on, earning the cat early bragging rights in a campaign that mixes football fever with animal welfare advocacy.

While the prediction brought smiles after Morocco’s win, organisers said the campaign’s real goal was not just about guessing match results.

Each “Furry Forecast” gives shelter animals the spotlight, allowing Malaysians to see their personalities and, hopefully, consider giving them a permanent home.

The campaign is a collaboration between SPCA Selangor, food company Real Food and local beverage brand Coco Loca, with Go Communications facilitating the partnership.

SPCA Selangor chairman Christine Chin said the shelter was filled with loving animals waiting to be part of a family.

Chin said bringing the animals into the World Cup spotlight was a cheerful way to showcase their different characters while reminding Malaysians of the joy rescued animals could bring into a home.

“Whether they are accurate in deciding the winners of this year’s World Cup, one thing is clear – they are already winners in our hearts,” she said.

Dr Tan describes the campaign as meaningful as it combines animal welfare with football excitement.

Real Food Real Good Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Dr Tan I-lene said the campaign was meaningful as it combined animal welfare with football excitement.

The veterinarian said the campaign not only celebrated the animals but also gave them a better chance of being seen by potential adopters.

“We are proud to stand behind these 16 furry pundits; hopefully they will be adopted by families.”

Football fans can follow the predictions on the social media pages of SPCA Selangor, Real Food, Coco Loca and Go Communications.

As for Wanton, its first forecast could not have gone better.

The cat may not be able to explain how Morocco found the net three times, but its winning pick has given the “Furry Forecast” campaign a purr-fect start.

Also at the forecast launch were former Australian national footballer Abbas Saad and Go Communications chief executive officer and former football professional Peter de Kretser.
