Fast completion promised for walkway gaps at Shah Alam stations
Selangor government and Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) have pledged immediate action to rectify incomplete pedestrian infrastructure around several new LRT stations.
The move follows a recent viral video highlighting safety hazards for commuters using the newly opened Shah Alam LRT Line (formerly LRT3).
The issue, which involves Stadium Shah Alam, Dato’ Menteri and Kerjaya stations, prompted an urgent site visit by state local government and tourism committee chairman Datuk Ng Suee Lim, Shah Alam mayor Datuk Zabidah Safar and Kota Anggerik assemblyman Mohd Najwan Halimi.
Speaking to reporters at the Stadium Shah Alam LRT station yesterday, Ng acknowledged the validity of the complaints, admitting that users face genuine risks due to missing last-mile connectivity.
Ng revealed that infrastructure operator Prasarana Malaysia Bhd had yet to complete vital sections of the walkways, including an additional alignment, due to site and permit constraints.
“When a big project finishes, there will always be teething problems.
“We take full responsibility and are pushing the relevant parties to fix these shortfalls.”
He assured commuters that works near the Dato’ Menteri and Stadium Shah Alam stations were expected to be completed within the next two months.
“MBSA has also been tasked with auditing existing contracts and tenders to expedite pedestrian walkway developments.
“We admit there are current weaknesses, but we will take strict measures to ensure things do not slip,” Ng said, adding that MBSA would proactively monitor all other stations within its jurisdiction.
Zabidah said pedestrian walkways were already embedded in the area’s master plan, but developers must fulfil their obligations regarding transit-oriented development (TOD) projects.
“The development here relies heavily on the designated developers,” she said, adding that MBSA would work closely with them to expedite the work.
Meanwhile, Mohd Najwan, who is also state youth, sports and entrepreneurship committee chairman, said while some pedestrian crossings exist, they remain incomplete and poorly timed.
“MBSA needs to immediately look into the pedestrian traffic lights near AEON Mall Shah Alam and adjust the timing to make the crossing more practical,” he said, noting that some commuters have resorted to dangerous jaywalking to get to their destinations more quickly.
In a media statement, MBSA said Prasarana was currently constructing a covered walkway connecting Dato’ Menteri station to Shah Alam Convention Centre, PKNS Complex and the Maybank building along Persiaran Bandaraya.
“At Stadium Shah Alam station, Prasarana is required to provide walkways along Jalan Lontar Peluru 13/39, Jalan Tukul Besi 13/41 and Persiaran Sukan.
“Neighbouring developers will develop connecting networks in stages.
“As an interim measure, MBSA will build a 200m connecting walkway from Stadium Shah Alam station to the Persiaran Sukan-Persiaran Akuatik traffic lights within one month,” said the statement.
The 37.8km Shah Alam LRT Line officially opened for service on Monday.
