EIGHTEEN households in Taman Seri Kerayong, Kapar, Selangor face recurring ankle-deep flash floods as a 180m-long earth-cut drain to divert surface runoff is no longer functioning.
Taman Seri Kerayong Residents Association committee member Elmee Ashari Suboh said during intense rain, surface runoff was channelled into a drainage system along Lorong Kerayong, parallel to Jalan Klang-Teluk Intan, before entering a concrete culvert beneath the roadway.
“Rainwater flowing beneath the roadway cannot discharge efficiently as the earth-cut drain is now filled with earth, resulting in backflow into Lorong Kerayong causing ankle-deep floodwaters.”
Elmee Ashari added that the rainwater gushes into narrow drains bordering Taman Seri Kapar.
Housewife Masturah Ahmet said the earth-cut drain off Jalan Keretapi Lama has been overgrown with vegetation and buried under soil for eight years.
“Most of the time, surface runoff overflows onto Lorong Kerayong and enters the neighbourhood drains and later our car porch,” she said.
Stall owner Minah Mahmud urged Klang Public Works Department (JKR) to also remove the compacted sediment accumulated beneath the Jalan Klang–Teluk Intan monsoon drain.

Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) councillor Aziz Khan Muhammed Ali, who visited the site with Elmee Ashari following residents’ complaints, said he would discuss with Klang JKR to carry out rectification works.
“Affected residents are frustrated over the persistent flooding because even moderate downpour can lead to flooding of Lorong Kerayong.
“Many fear that the situation could worsen during the monsoon season if immediate remedial action is not taken.”
Aziz Khan said residents want a comprehensive assessment of the area’s drainage infrastructure, including an investigation into why the earth-cut drain was no longer in use and whether alternative flood mitigation measures were put in place.
He said ensuring the drain could function was a practical solution to alleviate flooding while long-term drainage improvements were considered.
When contacted, a spokesperson from Klang JKR Roads and Facilities Unit said the monsoon drain bordering Lorong Kerayong that goes beneath Jalan Klang-Teluk Intan was being desilted and trapped bulk waste removed.
“For the 180m earth-cut drain, Klang JKR will verify the land status,” he added.
