KDEB Waste Management seeking diesel subsidy coverage amid increasing cost pressures

SHAH ALAM: KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM) is seeking a federal diesel subsidy for its roll-on, roll-off (RoRo) lorries to counter rising operational costs driven by the global energy crisis.

Selangor local government and tourism committee chairman Datuk Ng Suee Lim said KDEBWM's RoRo lorries are currently ineligible for the diesel subsidy offered by the federal government.

"KDEBWM, through the state government, is currently seeking the Finance Ministry's approval for its RoRo lorries to also be included in the diesel subsidy scheme.

"It has suffered huge losses because the RoRo lorries are forced to endure the unsubsidised diesel price, which is now very high.

"Waste management is an essential service that must not be overlooked. We cannot risk damaging the environment and public health because of poor waste management caused by financial pressure," said Ng, who is also the chairman of KDEBWM's board of directors.

While awaiting the Finance Ministry's response, he also urged the state government to allocate extra funds into the Selangor Resilience Enhancement Package to support KDEBWM for six months.

Ng’s comments come in response to Michelle Ng Mei Sze (PH-Subang Jaya), who raised concerns about KDEBWM's service delivery amid the cost pressures during the winding-up speech at the Selangor state assembly sitting at Bangunan Dewan Negeri Selangor in Shah Alam, Selangor, on June 22.

Mei Sze also suggested the state government intervene to cushion KDEBWM's costs during the energy crisis, stating that RM4mil in extra funds per month is needed to support the waste management sector.
