SELANGOR is evaluating plans to expand its bus rapid transit (BRT) network beyond the existing Sunway line, to cover high-density corridors such as Puchong, Glenmarie and Kwasa Damansara.
State investment, trade and mobility committee chairman Ng Sze Han said the mobility committee was holding discussions with key stakeholders to assess the proposal.
He added that the committee and Menteri Besar Selangor Incorporated (MBI) were also exploring potential collaborations with Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) and TransJakarta.
ITDP is an international non-profit organisation specialising in sustainable urban transport, while TransJakarta is Jakarta’s government-owned road-based public transport operator.
Ng said Indonesia’s BRT network began in 2004, with ITDP serving as a think tank and adviser to Jakarta’s transport authorities.
“Starting with only 13km and one corridor, TransJakarta now operates 14 corridors covering more than 250km.
“In comparison, Malaysia only has the Sunway BRT, covering 5.4km and serving only one catchment area,” he said.
Ng said Selangor should work towards creating a wider BRT ecosystem to improve access to public transport.
“It would be good if we could expand the Sunway BRT service to other catchment areas such as Puchong, Glenmarie or even Kwasa Damansara,” he said during the Selangor State Assembly at Bangunan Dewan Negeri Selangor in Shah Alam yesterday.
He was responding to a supplementary question from Danial Al-Rashid Haron Aminar Rashid (PH-Batu Tiga) regarding economic and mobility partnerships between Selangor and West Java.
Ng said following Selangor International Business Summit @ Asean 2026 held in West Java in July, Invest Selangor had identified aerospace and rail, semiconductors and digital, halal economy, medical tourism, higher education and urban mobility as sectors with potential for further cooperation between Selangor and West Java.
Ng also said that Malaysia was among the largest investors in West Java over the past five years, with realised investments amounting to 47 trillion rupiah (RM10.76bil).
