Penang Island City Council (MBPP) collected nearly RM120mil in assessment tax revenue so far, achieving 44% of its RM263mil target for 2026.

Penang island mayor Datuk A. Rajendran said MBPP collected RM117mil as of April.

“We are on track to meet this year’s assessment tax target.

“The current performance reflects encouraging compliance among ratepayers under MBPP’s jurisdiction,” he said.

Rajendran said assessment tax payments were crucial for the city council to continue delivering services, maintaining infrastructure and carrying out development projects across the island.

To recognise prompt taxpayers, MBPP continued its annual assessment tax lucky draw programme this year.

A total of 57,934 taxpayers qualified for the lucky draw, which aims to reward those who consistently pay their assessment taxes on time while encouraging greater compliance among ratepayers.

This year, 95 taxpayers were selected as winners, with prizes worth a total of RM35,500.

Among the prizes offered were an electric motorcycle as the grand prize, gold bars, motorised luggage bag, electric bicycle, laptop, digital camera, electronic devices and 85 e-wallet credits through the Pearl One Touch Penang application worth between RM100 and RM300.

Goh Cheng Chai won the grand prize, followed by Mah Yeok Sun, Palmex Industries Sdn Bhd, Khor Yi Wei and Tenaga Nasional Bhd.

The winners were announced during a ceremony at City Hall, with Rajendran drawing the main prizes.

He congratulated the winners and expressed hope that taxpayers, who did not win this year, would continue paying their assessment taxes within the stipulated time period.
