Buntong, Manjoi flood mitigation work to complete by 2030

Mohamad Nizar says upgrading works will be done along Sungai Pari in Buntong and Manjoi.

FLOOD mitigation works in Buntong and Manjoi in Ipoh are expected to be completed within four years.

Perak infrastructure, energy, water and transportation committee chairman Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin said the works, which began on Jan 14, were scheduled for completion by Jan 14, 2030.

“The government through the Drainage and Irrigation Department is implementing the Sungai Kinta Flood Mitigation Plan (RTB) Phase 2, which includes upgrading works along Sungai Pari in Buntong and Manjoi areas.

“The project will also see local authorities upgrading Jambatan Jalan Raja,” he said.

He was replying to M. Thulsi (PH-Buntong) who asked about the recent floods at the Buntong and Manjoi areas during the Perak State Assembly sitting at Bangunan Perak Darul Ridzuan yesterday.

Mohammad Nizar said a rainfall station, warning siren and flow monitoring system were being developed near Sungai Pari under Phase 2 of the National Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre project, expected to be completed this month.

“We hope the station will give early warnings to residents when water levels rise in the area.”

He also said that unplanned land development without proper implementation of an Erosion and Sediment Control Plan (ESCP) could result in sediment flowing into rivers and being carried downstream.

“This can cause rivers to become shallow due to the accumulation of sediment.

“Therefore, properly planned land clearing, with the provision and strict compliance to ESCP requirements, is crucial to reduce the impact of declining river capacity,” he added.
