RM10,000 boost for community outreach

Social activist donates proceeds from book to Star Foundation

Star Foundation received a RM10,000 donation from veteran social activist Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, who praised the foundation for its role in nation-building.

The foundation, which is the charitable arm of Star Media Group (SMG), has played an important role in bridging social gaps, fostering community development and assisting vulnerable Malaysians.

Lee presented the mock cheque at the Star Gallery at Menara Star in Phileo Damansara, Petaling Jaya.

The event was witnessed by SMG chairman Tan Sri Wong Foon Meng, group chief executive officer Chan Seng Fatt, chief operating officer Lydia Wang, chief content officer Datin Paduka Esther Ng and managing editor Brian Martin.

“The Star has been a strong platform for nation-building. I want to align myself with the good work SMG has embarked on.

“The work carried out through the foundation reaches deserving groups such as the low-income and the underprivileged.

“The flagship initiatives, such as the Medical Fund Programme, address the critical need to provide financial assistance to underprivileged individuals requiring life-saving surgeries and long-term treatments,” Lee said.

He added that this helped save lives and restore health, while supporting the social stability required for the country.

He said the foundation was also focused on long-term empowerment through the Star Social Impact Grant (SSIG), partnering with non-governmental organisations and social enterprises to tackle systemic issues.

These include providing clean water solutions in rural Sabah and Sarawak, as well as supporting literacy programmes for Orang Asli children.

Education and environmental stewardship are also part of the foundation’s mission.

Initiatives such as the “Second Chance” programme support marginalised groups by equipping them with skills for employment.

Lee said the foundation, through the Star Golden Hearts Award, celebrated unsung heroes who carried out selfless acts of kindness and promoted the Malaysian spirit of muhibbah.

Lee said the donation came from proceeds of his book, Call Lee Lam Thye: Recalling a Lifetime of Service, a 312-page biography detailing his 50-year career.

He added that he had always been passionate about serving the community, having entered politics at the age of 23.

His role as executive secretary of the National Union of Commercial Workers (NUCW) in 1969 made him more aware of the needs, rights and welfare of the people.

Lee said SMG, as a brand, played an important role in nation building.

“My favourite section of The Star newspaper is the Letters to the Editor page. People from all backgrounds are able to share their views and opinions there.

“I hope The Star will expand that space and allow more letters to be published.”
