Mukah has a new court complex, launched by Chief Justice Datuk Seri Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh.

It is located at Lot 426 and 427, Block 50, Jalan Desa Tanjung, Phase 2.

The opening ceremony was attended by Court of Appeal president Datuk Abu Bakar Jais, Chief Judge of Malaya Datuk Hashim Hamzah and Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak Datuk Azizah Nawawi.

Others present included social transformation section head Mohd Amirul Valentine Laiseh representing the Mukah Division Resident, and Mukah OCPD DSP Mohamad Rizal Alias.

The new court complex is now fully operational with the support of a workforce including Sessions Court judges, magistrates, assistant law enforcement officers and interpreters.

In a statement, Mukah Magistrate’s Court magistrate Oon Kork Chern said the new court renovation project cost RM474,925 and was implemented to provide more conducive facilities for legal practitioners and the public.

The Mukah Court was previously located at the 78-year-old Old Administration Building at Fort Burdett II.

From there the court relocated to several temporary sites including the Mukah District Police Headquarters and the Syariah Court.

“The move to the new premises will not only provide comfort to all parties, but will also enable judicial operations to be carried out more efficiently and systematically,” he said.

Oon added that the move would also enable the Old Administration Building, which had its own historical value, to be preserved as a state heritage archive.

In terms of service record, he said the Mukah Magistrate’s Court once housed a First Class Magistrate, Amir Shah Amir Hassan, who served from 2007 to 2008.

The service was then continued by Iris Awen Jon from 2008 to 2010.

Since being designated a Circuit Court in 2010, the court has come under the jurisdiction of Sibu Court (2010-2018), Bintulu Court (2018-2022), and once again Sibu Court from 2022.

Commenting on the court’s performance, Oon said in 2025, the Mukah Sessions Court recorded 110 cases with 95 cases successfully resolved and 15 cases pending.

As for the Magistrate’s Court, a total of 1,429 cases were registered throughout the same year, with 1,070 cases successfully resolved and 359 pending.

The Mukah Court services in the Old Administration Building ended on June 30, 2025 and operations officially moved to the new building on Feb 10, 2026, added Oon.

“This move allows judicial services to be carried out in a more modern, comfortable and complete environment with the latest facilities for the benefit of the local community,” he said.
