Selayang council to hold workshop over waste issues

SELAYANG Municipal Council (MPS) will hold a three-day workshop in April to tackle waste collection, dumping issues and clogged drains, after feedback from councillors on repeated public complaints.

Council president Shahman Jalaludin said the workshop would involve MPS personnel, councillors and relevant agencies to discuss solutions.

He was responding to concerns raised during the council’s full board meeting at Menara MPS in Bandar Baru Selayang over uncollected waste, roadside dumping and clogged drains.

“The workshop is to explore the perspectives and issues from all parties, including the council, operators and communities.

“We need to identify short-, medium- and long-term solutions and if we have to spend money to implement them, we will do so,” he said.

Zone 17 councillor P. Mariammal has received numerous complaints, especially from restaurant operators, on uncollected waste in commercial areas.

“Some owners say rubbish in their area is sometimes not collected for up to four or five days.

“They are worried that this could drive their customers away,” said Mariammal.

Zone 12 councillor U Chin Ong highlighted the increasing number of roadside dumping and clogged drains.

Such issues, he said, were becoming routine and could undermine public confidence in MPS’ management.

Zone 16 councillor V. Anmuniandy said he had repeatedly raised the matter with waste collection contractors KDEB Waste Management Sdn Bhd, but there was little progress.

Zone 5 councillor Nooraimi Hani Ahmad Suhaimi said many residents did not know they could apply for special rubbish pickup during certain occasions.

“Recently, a group of residents held a gotong-royong but simply piled the gathered waste in an open area,” she said.

In reply to all the issues raised, Shahman said domestic waste collection schedule was three times a week and twice a week for bulk or garden waste.

He added that several major periods such as Thaipusam, Chinese New Year and Ramadan that took place in close succession might have led to a surge in the volume of rubbish.

On the matter of assessment tax, Shahman said MPS collected RM59.1mil as of Feb 28, accounting for 81% of the RM72.8mil it was projected to collect.

As for arrears, he said the municipal council recovered RM3mil or 26.3% of the RM11.5mil it was owed.

Shahman added that more than 97,000 property owners have received their bills for the first quarter of 2026 on WhatsApp since MPS began sending assessment bills via the mobile application.
