Tabung Haji RCI debate: Bersatu MPs remain as Opposition walks out

KUALA LUMPUR: While the majority of the Opposition MPs walked out of the Dewan Rakyat, refusing to debate the Tabung Haji Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) findings without the Prime Minister present, Bersatu MPs decided to stay on.

Datuk Radzi Jidin (PN-Putrajaya) took to social media to say that Bersatu MPs would not walk out.

“Bersatu MPs are in the opposition. We will not walk out. This is an important issue for the people and there is no need for political drama. We have even called for the debate to be extended. The people need the truth,” he said in a Facebook post on Tuesday (Aug 11).

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was unable to attend the special sitting today as he continues to recover under medical supervision.

Citing Standing Order 11(3), opposition chief whip Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan (PN-Kota Bharu) said the RCI report was a matter of public interest and required the Prime Minister’s attendance.

"Given that the TH issue is highly significant and of considerable public interest, it would be appropriate for the presentation and debate on this report to be attended and presented personally by the Prime Minister once he returns to duty," he said.

However, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul said the special sitting could proceed as Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and other Cabinet members are present in the House.
