BUDDHIST monks and nuns will gather in Kuala Lumpur for a National Day event of blessings and reflection.
Over 120 are expected to join the blessing ceremony, called “Maha Sanghika Dana”, at SJK (C) Tsun Jin in Jalan Perwira, Kampung Pandan on Aug 30.
The half-day event is organised by United Buddhist Order of Malaysia (Ubom) with a coalition of 14 Buddhist organisations from Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.
The event with the theme “Understanding unites, kindness blesses” aims to bring together the Malaysian Buddhist community in conjunction with the country’s 69th National Day celebrations.
Event advisor Datuk Seri Steven Ooi said the 2026 edition marked a significant milestone as it was being held in Kuala Lumpur for the first time, following three consecutive years in Penang.
Last year’s event was held at SMJK Phor Tay in Sungai Dua, George Town.
“The number of Sangha members, including monks and nuns, has already exceeded 120 and we are expecting more to join.
“This gathering offers devotees and the public an opportunity to participate in traditional Buddhist practices of generosity, blessing and reflection,” said Ooi.
“Thailand’s supreme sangha council member, Somdet Phra Mahavajiramunivong, who is the abbot of Wat Phra Sri Mahathat Woramahawihan, is expected to attend,” he said during a press conference at his office in Jalan Air Itam, George Town.
“The highlight of the programme will be the traditional Pindapata, during which 69 monks (one for each year of independence) will walk in silence with their alms bowls as devotees offer food in accordance with Buddhist tradition.
“This will be followed by the National Day blessings ceremony, robe offering, communal lunch, dhamma talk and dedication of merits.
“‘Maha Sanghika Dana’ is a significant Buddhist tradition which represents dana (generosity and selfless giving) while expressing gratitude, respect and support for the Buddhist monastic community.”
The event also carries a broader message for Malaysians to reflect on what brings us together as a nation, he said.
“Understanding, kindness, generosity and respect for one another are values that transcend race and religion.
“We hope the 2026 gathering will provide a meaningful platform for the Malaysian Buddhist community to express their prayers and aspirations for the continued peace, stability, unity and prosperity of the nation.”
The event is free and will begin at 7am. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.
