RUBBISH collection in Johor is expected to increase by up to 10% during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri period, compared with the daily statewide average of 4,300 tonnes.

Data from Johor Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Corporation (SWCorp) showed that nearly 5,000 tonnes of rubbish were collected daily in the first three days of Hari Raya last year, with food waste the largest portion.

SWM Environment Sdn Bhd corporate affairs general manager Mohd Norlisam Mohd Nordin said in anticipation, the company had strengthened operations ahead of the festive period.

“Special attention will be given to 120 locations with a high concentration of Muslim residents, including Bandar Baru UDA, Kampung Melayu Majidee and PPR Stulang,” he said after launching the Aidilfitri Solid Waste Operation in Larkin, Johor Baru.

Some 4,500 cleaning personnel have been deployed across Johor, supported by 620 specialised vehicles such as compactor trucks, open tippers and roll-on, roll-off (RoRo) lorries.

Mohd Norlisam said one of the main challenges during the festive period was blocked collection routes caused by vehicles parked indiscriminately.

“Obstructed roads can slow down waste collection and may even lead to minor accidents, such as scratches to both collection vehicles and residents’ cars,” Mohd Norlisam said in urging motorists to keep collection routes clear.

“As in previous years, we expect bulk waste to increase as households prepare for Hari Raya.”

He advised residents to place such waste beside their wheeled bins or at centralised collection points according to the collection schedule.

Mohd Norlisam also reminded the public to dispose of used fireworks and firecrackers properly.

“These preparations are aimed at safeguarding the environment and maintaining cleanliness.

“We hope this will help households keep their homes and neighbourhoods clean while allowing our personnel to carry out their duties efficiently.”

Aidilfitri Solid Waste Operation is ongoing until March 22. For enquiries, contact the Indahkasa Malaysia hotline at 1-800-88-7472 or WhatsApp 012-618 0082.
