AI sensors boost road safety in Subang Jaya

Pedestrians and motorists in Subang Jaya, Selangor, can look forward to safer streets following the rollout of smart traffic lights.

Smart Sensor Awareness (Sensa) system, introduced by Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) last month, is a pedestrian detection and warning tool.

It uses artificial intelligence to improve safety, especially in high-risk areas and near schools.

“The system is capable of automatically detecting the presence of pedestrians and activating real-time audio and visual warnings for drivers and pedestrians,” MBSJ Corporate and Strategic Management Department said in a statement.

“It is also equipped with 24-hour camera monitoring as a security and crime prevention measure.

“Sensa integrates a smart camera with AI analytics, loudspeaker and blue LED light bar as a clear and effective visual signal to increase awareness among road users.”

The system has been installed at a pedestrian crossing in front of SMK Puchong Permai.

It will be expanded in stages to other strategic locations within MBSJ’s jurisdiction.

“Its implementation using solar energy is in line with the aspirations of the smart city concept and the city council’s commitment to being a low-carbon city,” the department added.
