Chinese New Year was brighter for 90-year-old dialysis patient Ong Boon Kee, thanks to a RM500 gift from Mawar Haemodialysis Centre (PHM) in Seremban, Negri Sembilan.
Ong was among 167 patients who received cash aid from PHM management board chairman Datuk Seri Lee Tian Hock.
The father of six, who has been undergoing treatment at PHM for six years, was thankful for the gift.
“I will share this money with my family to usher in the Year of the Fire Horse,” said Ong while receiving treatment.
Ishak Shariff, 57, who has been on dialysis for over 30 years, said the money would come in handy for him and his wife.
Double amputee P. Pushpah, 55, a former security guard and mother of two, said the cash would help settle some debts and ease her family’s financial burden.
Lee said the cash distribution was from PHM’s 2025 profits amounting to about RM84,000.
“In line with PHM’s status as a non-profit organisation, we decided to give back.
“We are committed to supporting the B40 group,” he said.
Dialysis treatments at PHM are subsidised, with Lee revealing that the total in subsidies provided last year alone reached RM2.12mil.
He said patients were charged between RM110 and RM200 per session, lower than the RM250 charged on average elsewhere.
Only 31 patients are self-paying, while the others are either fully or partially sponsored.
“This initiative is an expression of our unwavering dedication to ensuring dialysis treatment remains accessible,” he said.
He added that PHM would continue its efforts to give back to the community.
At the event, Lee launched Mawar Medical Centre’s new health screening unit.
He said the unit was able to deliver same-day results for most packages, with the aim to make health screenings more accessible and encourage the public to prioritise preventive care.
