Mounting bike repair cost leads owner to pull the brakes

A SAFETY and security officer who sent his 17-year-old motorcycle for repair was unhappy that the mechanic could not resolve the problem but asked for more money.

Ong says the mechanic started repairs in September last year.
Ong says the mechanic started repairs in September last year.

Ong Kie Kung, 66, said he sent his motorcycle to the home-based workshop at Taman Kota Masai in Pasir Gudang, Johor on Aug 3 last year.

“I told him that there was something wrong with the engine, but after inspecting the engine, he said it was okay,” Ong said when met outside the Johor Consumer Claims Tribunal at Menara Ansar, Johor Baru.

He said the mechanic had then claimed that the main problem with his motorcyle was a faulty motor crankshaft that needed to be replaced.

A motor crankshaft is the main rotating component of an internal combustion engine that converts the linear (up-and-down) motion of the pistons into rotational torque, Ong said.

Located in the engine block, the hardened, forged steel or iron shaft drives the flywheel and drivetrain, providing the power necessary to move the vehicle.

Ong said when the mechanic quoted RM2,600 to replace the crankshaft, he made a bank transfer of the sum on the same day.

“He promised to fix the problems within two weeks, after receiving the crankshaft,” he said.

The mechanic started the repairs in September by dismantling the engine.

Ong said once the engine was dismantled, the mechanic claimed that the motor engine gasket was also faulty and needed to be replaced and quoted RM500 which Ong also paid via online transfer.

“A few days later, he called to tell me that the whole engine needed to undergo major overhaul and it would cost RM8,000.”

Ong declined to proceed with engine overhaul and his motorcycle was left with its engine dismantled until November.

“I had to hire an on-demand courier to take my motorcycle and the dismantled engine to a workshop in Tampoi.”

Ong said he paid RM5,200 to have his vehicle repaired in Tampoi.

Tribunal president Hafez Zalkapli ordered the respondent to refund RM2,380 to the claimant within two weeks.
