Govt mulls free language classes for young Malaysians in Putrajaya, says Hannah

PUTRAJAYA: THE government is considering offering free language lessons for young Malaysians in Putrajaya, says Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh.

Taking up the Prime Minister’s challenge to learn and master three languages, including Malay, Yeoh said the ministry was considering recruiting retired Chinese, Tamil and Arabic language teachers to conduct free classes or provide platforms for students to practise their communication skills in the new languages that they wish to learn.

With Putrajaya being a predominantly Malay population, she also said that the students may not be exposed to other cultures or practise other languages.

“When learning a new language, one needs a lot of practice using the language.

“Otherwise, it will be very difficult.”

“Another initiative we are considering is organising a sports programme to tackle the high rate of childhood obesity in Putrajaya,” she said at a press conference after the launch of Putrajaya Open Day 2026 at Kompleks Perbadanan Putrajaya in Precinct 3.

The Putrajaya Open Day 2026 will be held for four days, ending Feb 1, which is also the Federal Territory Day.

Themed “Satu Destinasi, Pelbagai Solusi” (One Destination, Many Solutions), about 500 exhibitors will be participating including various ministries, government agencies and the private sector.

Among the highlights is the presence of two elephants from the National Elephant Conservation Centre in Kuala Gandah, Pahang.

There will also be education and career programmes, family-friendly recreational activities, food stalls and entertainment.
