Yeoh: Bangun KL a private sector initiative to improve traffic in city

HANNAH YEOH has dismissed criticism of "Bangun KL", noting that it is not a government initiative.

The Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) said the private sector's efforts to improve Kuala Lumpur should be welcomed.

"The initiative and the tagline 'Bangun KL' are by Zus Coffee Group, and there is no cost to the government.

"We work with anyone who wants to benefit the people.

"It is better than doing nothing; if you want to criticise any programme, I'm sure anyone can find something wrong with every single one," she said today at an event in Bandar Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur.

As part of the initiative launched on April 9, 250 Zus Coffee outlets in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya are offering discounted drinks to customers who purchase their products via its app between 7am and 8am

During the launch, Yeoh said the initiative focuses on behavioural change through incentives and cross-sector collaboration to address traffic challenges in the city.

However, it has drawn criticism, with many questioning its effectiveness in easing traffic in the city during peak hours.

Yeoh said traffic jams are not just a problem in Kuala Lumpur.

"Many cities in other countries are facing this issue as well.

"Our latest measure is implementing work from home because of rising fuel prices.

"The Transport Ministry is doing everything it can with public transportation.

"If everybody does their part, the traffic situation will improve," she said.
