Schools, teachers recognised by local council for recycling efforts

Teacher Farah A. Rahman, 57, has always wanted her students to appreciate nature.

This simple wish led her to collaborate with Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) for the past 10 years through a recycling project at her school.

Recognising her commitment to such efforts, MBSJ awarded the teacher from SK Puchong Utama 2 with the Icon Teacher Award.

The school, which collected 13,243kg of recyclables from January to October 2025, also won the Highest Recycling Collection Award in the primary school category.

A jubilant Farah explained that Thursdays were recycling days at the school.

“We also have recycling rangers. They are like school prefects, but help out with recycling projects.

“At the school, we also separate wastes at the canteen as part of our recycling efforts,” she said at the finale of MBSJ School Recycling Competition 2025.

The prize-giving ceremony in USJ was opened by Subang Jaya mayor Datuk Amirul Azizan Abd Rahim.

In recognising the efforts and commitment of schools in promoting recycling practices, MBSJ presented awards for first to third places in the primary and secondary school categories as well as the two Icon Teacher Awards.

“For 2025, MBSJ received 49 entries from 31 primary schools and 18 secondary schools, with a total of 127,516.33kg of recyclable materials collected from January to October 2025.

“This is an increase compared to 46,372.52kg in 2024,” Amirul Azizan said.

In the secondary school category, Santi Dapari from SMK USJ13 won the Icon Teacher Award while Sekolah Agama Menengah Bestari took the highest collection award for gathering 10,253kg of recyclables.

In addition to the competition, MBSJ also organised environmental education and awareness programmes to provide briefings and practical guidance to schools.

The programmes are enhanced with hands-on activities for students, stimulating creativity and providing a more effective experiential learning experience.

As part of the city council’s green efforts, it has also established two recycling galleries at 3C Complex in Bandar Sunway as learning centres on waste segregation and recycling.

MBSJ School Recycling Competition 2025 was supported by strategic partner Fraser & Neave Holdings Bhd which collaborated with MBSJ in strengthening education and recycling awareness efforts at school level.

Also present at the ceremony were Subang Jaya deputy mayor Mohd Zulkurnain Che Ali and Fraser & Neave event sponsorship manager Muhammad Fauzi Ahmad.
