Education facilities at SMK Kanowit in Sarawak have improved following completion of a RM49.9mil project.

The project, which started in 2023, was also completed two months ahead of schedule.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the project was delivered on Nov 5, 2025, to the Education Ministry by Sarawak Special Project Team 2 (PPK2 Sarawak).

“The implementation of this project is of great significance to students, teachers and staff.

“It is in line with the government’s commitment to provide a conducive learning ecosystem and safe and quality educational infrastructure,” he said at the handover ceremony.

The project includes construction of an administrative block, academic block with 18 classrooms, surau, design and technology workshop, computer lab, chemistry lab, integrated science lab and two resource rooms.

Other infrastructure comprised a pump and fire room, main electrical room, two playgrounds, waiting huts, bicycle sheds and guard huts.

Nanta expressed his appreciation to all parties, including the Public Works Department (JKR), state Education Department, main contractors and the local community for their cooperation in making the project a success.

“The Works Ministry will continue to ensure that every development project is implemented with full integrity, professionalism and transparency.”

The Kapit MP said the SMK Kanowit project came under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) to improve the quality of education infrastructure throughout the country.

At the event, Nanta also donated RM20,000 to the SMK Kanowit parent teacher association. — By ANDY CHUA
