MELAKA: A new “Remaja Pertiwi” educational programme launched by a local non-governmental organisation is being positioned as a pilot initiative to uplift academic achievement among students from low-income families in the state.
The chairman of Pertubuhan Masyarakat Demi Anak Pertiwi, Cassel Krishnan, said the programme offers free tuition, character-building workshops, mentorship, public speaking training and digital literacy classes.
"For a start, 20 students, mostly from the Pengkalan Batu constituency, will receive guidance and leadership training as well as tuition in core SPM subjects and motivational sessions.
"All support will be provided free for seven months until June next year,” he said when met on Tuesday (December 2).
Krishnan said the students would also receive a monthly study allowance in the form of cash vouchers to purchase textbooks and stationery.
He said each participant will be paired with a mentor throughout the programme to provide continuous guidance and serve as a positive role model.
“They will also be allowed to manage their own student-led project under the supervision of their mentors,” he said.
Krishnan added that the programme aims not only to boost academic performance but also to nurture confidence, discipline and leadership skills.
“We will continue supporting them till they sit for SPM at the end of 2026, and after they receive their results, we will advise them on tertiary pathways and help them secure internships in fields they are interested in.
“For students who require further assistance, we will also help connect them with foundations and agencies offering scholarships,” he said.
