KL edition Monopoly to feature famous landmarks

ONE of the world’s most beloved board games, Monopoly, is now available in a Kuala Lumpur edition and was launched bang on time for Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026).

It features some of the capital’s famous landmarks like the PETRONAS Twin Towers and Dataran Merdeka, shopping area Bukit Bintang, tourist hotspots Kampung Baru, Chinatown and Little India, as well as upscale neighbourhoods like Bangsar.

The Community Chest and Chance cards also have local context, with instructions ranging from paying RM50 for laksa and nasi lemak, to covering the cost of general repairs on properties following monsoon rains or even catching a holiday flight from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).

Tourism Malaysia director general Datuk P. Manoharan described it as a good opportunity to promote the city as a tourist destination to locals and foreigners.

“Otherwise, we may take it for granted.

“I believe it is a good opportunity to identify and explore the various landmarks which are being highlighted in Monopoly.

“In a digital world, when everyone is on their phone, it is good to play games like these with family and bond, and at the same time learn about the city,” he said at the launch in KLIA Terminal 1.

Manoharan said in the first eight months, Malaysia received more than 28.2 million tourists, a 14% increase compared to the same period last year and is on target to achieving over 40 million tourists by the end of the year.

Hasbro’s Monopoly Kuala Lumpur Edition was developed by Winning Moves.

Also present at the launch was Winning Moves partnerships manager, Jennifer Lau.

She said Monopoly is a game about building dreams through places and community, and the Kuala Lumpur edition tells the story of the city in a playful way.

“Monopoly is more than just a board game, it is a global icon that has brought friends and families together for 90 years this year and today it has also become a game that celebrates cities.

“At the start of this year, we started researching some of KL’s most beloved landmarks, attractions and hidden gems,” she said.

“We learned what the locals and tourists love about it, from the iconic PETRONAS Twin Towers to Merdeka Square, to bustling Bukit Bintang and the delicious food and vibrant culture that brings the city to life.

“We wanted locations that spark pride and nostalgia, as well as other spots that surprise and delight.

“Every location on the board tells its own story.

“We hope that this Kuala Lumpur edition will be a way for people to connect with the city in a fun way.

“It will be a way for families to rediscover some of the familiar places around the city while tourists can take a piece of KL home with them.

“For Malaysians, it is a reminder of how far the city has come.”
