Crowds thrilled to explore new interactive attraction with 3D graphics at Esplanade, Penang

GEORGE TOWN in Penang has always blended heritage with modernity, and this is typified by the newest attraction at the Esplanade.

Found at the seaside Linear Park – near the historic City Hall, Town Hall and Fort Cornwallis – is the Laser Interactive Projector with motion sensor experience.

This has transformed a 142m stretch of walkway into a kaleidoscopic river of light and motion every night.

Those who venture onto it will find 3D graphics bursting to life beneath their very feet.

Some of these elements react to visitors’ movements.

The system senses people strolling along and shifts parts of the animation in response.

Step onto ethereal waves and ripples may appear.

Hop over flowers and it could change colour.

Abstract patterns and seasonal greetings might even pop up here and there.

With 70 different animated segments, each lasting several minutes, one is bound to be engrossed long into the night.

The system, installed by the Penang Island City Council (MBPP), runs on 25 projectors mounted on poles along the path and was activated early November.

It has quickly become a magnet for families, joggers, photographers and anyone looking to experience a little magic after sundown and capture some unique content for social media.

So the next time you happen to be in the area, be sure to take some time to stroll down this enchanting, glowing walkway.

The lights are on from 7.30pm to 1am daily.

It is a free, fun and delightful experience for all ages, proof that Penang does not just preserve its past, but also playfully embraces the future.
