Travel agency staff roll up sleeves to build homes for two Orang Asli families

TWO underprivileged Orang Asli families will now have a new roof over their heads thanks to the joint efforts of about 100 staff from a travel agency.

The group led by Apple Travel Group managing director Datuk Seri Koh Yock Heng spent three days in Kampung Orang Asli Sungai Gabong, Bentong in Pahang, as part of a corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative.

The participants – though with no experience in architecture – were there to volunteer their time to carry out the arduous task.

Before starting, they were given a short briefing by several architects and safety experts on the dos and don’ts in order to avoid any untoward incident.

Then it was all systems go as the group toiled in the hot weather to ensure that the CSR project was completed on schedule with every nail hammered to perfection.

A simple handing-over ceremony was carried out on the final day, to the two recipients who expressed their appreciation to the travel agency and its staff for their concerted effort.

Koh said the initiative was made possible through good teamwork and community spirit.

“From bare ground to a beautiful new home, this is what love, teamwork and community spirit can do.

“We don’t just hand over a house, we celebrate a new chapter for two families in Kampung Orang Asli Sungai Gabong,” he said.

Koh said the project would not be the last and that they would continue to identify deserving and needy families to assist and give them a new lease on life.

He also hoped the two households could begin new chapters to raise their families filled with warmth and hope, knowing that society would not neglect them.
