MELAKA: More than just festive giving, a Chinese New Year outreach led by Melaka Deputy Legislative Assembly Speaker Kerk Chee Yee and a group of young entrepreneurs brought practical aid and moments of joy to orphans at a charity home here.
Event organiser Calvin Lim said the initiative aimed to share the festive spirit while providing essential food supplies and daily necessities to children in need.
"The Chinese New Year gifts were distributed to children of all races during our visit to a charity home here," he said on Thursday (Feb 12).
Lim said the programme was also intended to highlight communities that continue to face hardship during the festive period.
"While the Lunar New Year is commonly associated with reunion and celebration, some groups still struggle with limited financial resources and companionship," he said.
"This initiative seeks to raise awareness and extend care to those in need," he added.
He added that the contributions were funded through the collective efforts of practising entrepreneurs before the items and supplies were purchased.
Lim said free haircuts and interactive activities were also organised to create a more meaningful celebration for the children.
The visit was further enlivened by a lion dance performance by the Persatuan Penganut Dewi Po Wei Sheng Niang lion dance troupe, supported by Pertubuhan Penganut Dewa Hang Tiong Keng Melaka, adding festive colour to the charitable outreach.
