KLANG Royal City Council (MBDK) is transforming the Sungai Klang riverbank into a vibrant recreational hub, featuring 16 designated picnic spots.

Klang mayor Datuk Abd Hamid Hussain said visitors could pitch tents along the waterfront at Pengkalan Batu, Selangor.

“Our goal is to turn the waterfront into a lively community space where people can relax, connect and enjoy quality time.

“These spaces are all about fostering family togetherness and social bonds,” he said.

He added that the picnic site was near Jambatan Kota – the country’s first double-deck bridge which opened in 1961.

Abd Hamid highlighted that MBDK had incorporated bricks from the old Jalan Istana walking path into the tent bases, aligning with United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

“Under SDG 12 for responsible consumption and production, we are reducing construction waste and saving energy.

“Each reclaimed brick cuts roughly 500g of emissions.”

Abd Hamid said this was in line with United Nation’s SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 9 (Innovation and Infrastructure) by promoting circular economy practices.

Meanwhile, MBDK Corporate Communications director Norfiza Mahfiz said the picnic site would be enhanced with lights, closed-circuit TV (CCTV) cameras, electrical outlets and piped water for campers’ comfort.

“Registration is required for safety. Fees will be announced later,” she said.

She also said that plans were underway to include weekend markets, hammocks and picnic tables to encourage longer visits.

Norfiza added that the city council has also received a suggestion for a zipline from Jalan Pasar across Sungai Klang to the picnic area.
