RESIDENTS of Bandar Menjalara, Kuala Lumpur can now enjoy safer and more comfortable walks with the completion of a new pedestrian walkway along Jalan 1/62A.
The upgrade by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) began in May and was completed in August this year.
It was implemented by DBKL’s Civil Engineering and Drainage Department in collaboration with Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh’s office.
Federal Territories Residents Representative Council (MPPWP) Segambut Zone 1 chairman Datuk Seri Yap Keow Keong said the previous walkway had been in poor condition due to overgrown tree roots breaking through the concrete, making it unsafe.
“Its unsafe condition discouraged residents from using the walkway to get to a nearby park,” he said.
“This walkway wasn’t usable in the past and many residents didn’t use the park nearby.
“Several residents eventually took their complaints to Yeoh’s office, which led to DBKL stepping in to address the issue.”
Keow Keong said the upgrading works also involved removing hazardous trees that had become a safety concern.
“Another reason why DBKL worked so fast is because some trees were becoming a hazard and at risk of falling. These were removed and replaced with new ones,” he said.
“The upgrade will hopefully encourage residents to walk more, which will go towards reducing carbon emissions while promoting a healthier lifestyle.”
Villa Manja SPK Residents Association chairman Alex Gan said the residents’ response following the upgrade had been positive.
“It’s heartening to see the difference that the project makes. I hope more people will use the upgraded walkway to get to the nearby park, instead of driving,” said Gan.
During a press conference at the site, Yeoh’s political secretary Yap Yee Vonne said: “The goal is not just about fixing pedestrian walkways, but also creating safer, more liveable neighbourhoods where residents can move around comfortably without relying solely on private vehicles.”
Also present were MPP Segambut chairman Wong Zhong Yi and Yeoh’s special officer Shawn Obek.
