PERUMAHAN Awam (PA) Jalan Hang Tuah residents who complain of lack of parking want Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to offer them a monthly pass to park their vehicles at a nearby commercial area.

Stakeholders are requesting for a RM50 monthly pass to park at Lorong Meranti, Lorong Merbau and Jalan Kenanga outside their flats’ area.

Persatuan Penduduk Perumahan Awam Jalan Hang Tuah Kuala Lumpur president Mohd Ismail Abdullah said most of the residents there were willing to pay RM50 for the pass.

They made their request following DBKL’s two-week trial of a RM70 monthly parking pass in Kuchai Entrepreneurs Park earlier in June, as the area faced the same problem.

PA Jalan Hang Tuah resident Muhammad Afiq Abdullah said the existing 120-odd parking bays in the PA area were insufficient, forcing some residents to park their vehicles in nearby streets at the commercial area.

“We receive two to three summonses from DBKL per week for parking our vehicles in the commercial area.

“We cannot afford the RM2.50 hourly parking rate there as most of us are from the B40 group,” he said.

PA Jalan Hang Tuah falls under Bukit Bintang that is classified as Zone A (city centre areas), with DBKL charging an hourly parking rate of RM1.50 and RM2.50 for each subsequent hour.

For a monthly pass, a RM300 fee is charged.

The pass can also be used at Zone B (suburban areas with activities) and Zone C (other suburban areas).

Earlier on June 3, Mohd Ismail said the residents association (RA) wrote to Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa seeking special DBKL car stickers to allow them to park at the commercial area for free, without getting fined.

“We had also requested for the RM300 monthly parking charge to be waived to ease the residents’ financial burden,” he said.

Similar calls have been made by Bukit Bintang Federal Territory Residents Representative Council chairman Fong Kok Seng, who suggested that DBKL convert nearby underused parking bays into resident-only parking zones.

As at press time, DBKL did not respond to queries regarding the matter.
