Gelugor health carnival registration closes after overwhelming response

A FREE free health carnival in Gelugor, Penang, became filled to the brim days before the event, with organisers forced to close registration after more than 150 people signed up.

There will be nine doctors, five specialists and nine booths covering a range of services from health screening to cancer detection.

And so many people signed up that walk-ins cannot be entertained.

Participants will receive blood sugar and cholesterol checks, eye screenings, physiotherapy assessments, gut health checks, mental health consultations, and nutrition guidance.

Specialists will also be on hand for PAP smears, HPV tests, breast exams, and free colon cancer test kits for deserving patients.

The one-day event this Sunday (Aug 24), co-organised by the Malaysia Hindu Sangam Gelugor Local Council and Mitta for Life under the Mahindarama Buddhist Temple, will take place at SJK(T) Subramaniya Barathee in Gelugor from 8.30am to 12.30pm.

"Registration is closed. We cannot accept walk-ins because every booth and test kit has been allocated to those who registered," the organising team said in a statement.

Even breakfast, goodie bags, and vouchers are included.

"The aim is to create awareness of common medical problems and looking at the registrations, it’s a sign that people want to understand their bodies better and catch issues early," said Datuk Dr Jeyashree Srinivasan, the medical coordinator.

"This is a 100% voluntary effort to serve the community. We tailored everything to the number of confirmed names. We wish we could take more, but we can't,” said administrative coordinator VR.K. Kalah Rani.

Participants aged 18 and above were advised to fast overnight and bring their MyKad or passport, medical records, and medication lists for accurate checks.
