Transforming Sungai Durin riverbank into community hub in Sibu

WORK to enhance the Sungai Durin riverbank in Sibu for community activities is underway.

Dudong Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) chairman Datuk Teo Boon Siew said the plan to reclaim land along the riverbank had originated from local residents, who recognised the area’s potential.

Boon Siew said the reclamation works would see the riverbank being widened and elevated, making it a more comfortable, safe and suitable space for gatherings and community programmes.

Upon completion of the reclamation works, the next phase – led by his team and community leaders – will involve planting coconut trees along the riverbank.

“The idea is to transform this area into a scenic landscape lined with coconut trees.

“It will offer a serene setting to enjoy the sunset and hopefully serve as a new tourist attraction,” said Boon Siew during a site visit with Durin Penghulu Teo Wen Won.

He said the muddy area, situated between Sungai Durin and Sungai Rajang, often turned into a small stream during high tide.

“This made it difficult for people to access the riverbank as they must wade through puddles and shallow water,” he said.

Boon Siew also thank both Lanang MP Alice Lau and Dudong assemblyman Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing for allocating funds for land reclamation work.

He said subsequent works would include beautification and lighting initiatives to make the riverbank more visually appealing and visitor-friendly.

“Once both projects are completed, the initial design phase of the Durin Riverbank Park will commence,” said Boon Siew.

“This marks the beginning of a development that local residents have long hoped for.”

He said the project would also create opportunities for tourism.
