BEYOND treating their young patients and ensuring they are healthy, paediatricians want to see these children thrive.
At the Sunway Baby Homecoming event in Seberang Jaya, Prai, families gathered for the colourful community event by Sunway Medical Centre Penang to promote health awareness for families.
Paediatricians could see the children’s creativity and confidence when engaging in the various activities – from runway walks to the colourful artworks they proudly shared.
Over 100 children took part in the event featuring a photo contest, colouring contest and a talent show.
The fashion show saw young participants dressed as movie characters, bringing these characters to life on the runway.
The event also offered health education booths, led by the medical centre’s health team.
Parents were given tips and resources on child development, nutrition and family wellness.
The morning culminated in a prize-giving ceremony, celebrating the effort and talent of all participants.
Consultant paediatrician Dr Chong Phaik Khee said it was important for paediatricians to work with parents to nurture well-rounded, confident children.
“Children are the heart of our future and to help them thrive, we must support every aspect of their development, from physical health to emotional and social growth.
“Events like the Sunway Baby Homecoming are a joyful reminder of this shared journey – celebrating not just milestones, but also the meaningful progress in each child’s development.”
Consultant paediatrician and paediatric cardiologist Dr Roland Ng said although it was a joy to see a child grow up healthy and strong, there were sometimes hidden challenges.
“In Malaysia, about one in 100 babies are born with a heart defect. Warning signs like poor weight gain, rapid breathing, being tired during feeds or frequent lung infections may indicate an underlying issue.
“Left undetected, these conditions can affect a child’s growth and development.”
Dr Ng stressed that early detection and timely treatment were important.
“With the right care, many children with heart conditions can grow up healthy and active.”
Sunway Medical Centre Penang chief executive officer Christine Lee said the event showed how art and fashion could unleash children’s boundless imagination.
“Their creativity flowed freely with each brush stroke and their pure, joyful smiles shone through every outfit and accessory.
“This is a vibrant celebration of the resilience, hope and boundless energy within each child,” she said at the event’s opening.
She added that Sunway Baby Homecoming marked another step in the hospital’s ongoing mission to build stronger connections with the families it served, creating opportunities for joyful memories and valuable health education.
