BROKEN or missing concrete drainage covers on a walkway along Jalan SS12/4 in Subang Jaya, Selangor, pose a safety hazard to pedestrians.
Social activist CP Goh said the broken or missing drainage covers, outside a private hospital, could lead to a serious accident.
“Many pedestrians going to the hospital or nearby shops use this pavement.
“Almost all the concrete drain covers are broken or missing,” he said.
“I understand that pedestrians and cyclists have tripped or fallen into the open drains.”
Goh said several residents had spoken to him as they were unhappy with the authorities for failing to rectify these hazards.
The situation, he said, was particularly dangerous for seniors and those with limited mobility or visual impairment.
StarMetro observed that there were more than 15 concrete drain covers missing along the pavement.
Goh also urged relevant parties to paint road dividers along Jalan SS12/4 to make them visible at night.
According to an SS12 resident who wanted to be known as Li, the concrete drain covers were broken about five years ago when motorists going to the hospital parked on the pavement.
“The authorities must replace the concrete drain covers immediately.
“I suggest authorities instal bollards to deter motorists from parking on the pavement,” he said.
Li added that bollards would also prevent motorcyclists from riding on the pavement as well as deter snatch theft attempts.
Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) Corporate and Strategic Management Department director Muhammad Azli Miswan said the infrastructure along Jalan SS12/4 was under the purview of Public Works Department (JKR).
“MBSJ has forwarded the complaint to JKR,” he said.
