Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd has welcomed the state government’s implementation of the Water Resources Assurance Scheme (Skim Jaminan Air Mentah or SJAM).
SJAM is an initiative to ensure continuous clean water supply, even in the event of raw water source pollution.
Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari witnessed the handover ceremony and commissioning of the SJAM Pump Stations (packages A and C) in Bestari Jaya, Kuala Selangor.
The event marked a critical milestone in Selangor’s long-term strategy to address raw water pollution, which has caused major water supply disruptions since 2020.
SJAM aims to ensure the continuous operation of main water treatment plants and prevent water supply interruptions.
The system uses alternative raw water supply from the Hybrid Off-River Augmentation Storage (Horas) 600 and Hang Tuah Pond.
It is channelled directly to the inlet of water treatment plants at Rantau Panjang, Sungai Selangor Phase (SSP) 1, SSP 2 and SSP 3, thus bypassing any polluted river sources.
“SJAM is not only aimed at tackling pollution, but it is also part of the state’s long-term plan to ensure the continuity of raw water supply in the face of climate change and drought,” Amirudin said in his speech.
“I am confident that with SJAM, Selangor is now better equipped to prevent up to 95% of treatment plant shutdowns caused by river pollution,” he added.
State infrastructure and agriculture committee chairman Datuk Izham Hashim launched Package B under the same scheme last November.
Air Selangor chief executive officer Adam Saffian Ghazali said, “Air Selangor welcomes the SJAM project as it not only protects the continuity of our water treatment plant operations but also strengthens public confidence in reliability of the water system in Selangor.”
“As the implementation partner, Air Selangor will continue working closely with the state government and relevant agencies to ensure the system operates efficiently for the benefit of our 9.62 million consumers in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.”
Adam Saffian said Air Selangor also supported the state government’s multi-layered approach to water sustainability, which includes the Zero-Discharge Policy, Polluters Pay Principle and river-monitoring programmes in collaboration with non-governmental organisations.
Also present at the handover ceremony were Selangor State Secretary Datuk Dr Ahmad Fadzli Ahmad Tajuddin, Selangor Deputy State Secretary (Development) Datuk Johary Anuar and Selangor Speaker Lau Weng San.
