EFFORTS to mitigate long-standing flood issues in Kampung Baru Ampang, Selangor, are progressing, with drain upgrades currently underway.
The project is being carried out by Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ), with a RM700,000 Housing and Local Government Ministry allocation.
MPAJ Zone 8 councillor Datuk Yap Wee Seng said upgrading works were expected to be completed by the end of next month.
“The scope of the current phase involves deepening existing drains and reconnecting them to the main monsoon drain.
“This is aimed at improving water discharge during heavy rainfall, which often causes flash floods in the area,” he said, adding that the last major flood there occurred last October.
Yap said this was the second upgrading project to be undertaken in the area in recent years.
“The last upgrade was in 2021, when works were carried out from Jalan 3 to Jalan 6. But flooding still persisted.
“I consistently raised this matter with MPAJ during our meetings.
“From there, the council sought funding and submitted a request to the ministry.
“Now, the focus is at Jalan 3 which connects to the Bandar Baru Ampang area.”
Yap said that following the completion of the current phase, there were plans to proceed with upgrades at Jalan 7 in Kampung Baru Ampang.
“However, this would depend on the availability of funds,” he added.
A site visit to monitor the progress of the works was held last month involving Bukit Antarabangsa assemblyman Mohd Kamri Kamaruddin who is also Selangor State Assembly Deputy Speaker, representatives from MPAJ’s Engineering Department and the appointed contractor.
