This year’s Malaysia Family Gathering by non-governmental organisation Motor Neuron Disease (MND) Malaysia saw 53 individuals take part in a three-day excursion by train from Kuala Lumpur to Taiping, Perak.
Organised by Taiping Tourism Association, the participants were MND patients in wheelchairs, their family members, children, caregivers, volunteers and MND Malaysia committee members.
In a media statement, the association said the trip, which took place aboard the KTM Bhd train service, was more than just an excursion – it was a celebration of life, resilience and unity.
For many MND patients who face daily mobility challenges, the journey provided a rare opportunity to explore the scenic beauty of Taiping, renowned for its greenery, historic landmarks and tranquil lakes, MND Malaysia said.
Participants enjoyed visits to Taiping Lake Gardens, Spritzer Eco-Park, Taiping Night Safari and My Charcoal Factory.
Special accommodation was arranged to ensure accessibility and comfort throughout the trip, underscoring MND Malaysia’s commitment to inclusivity and care.
The opportunity to take flight in an ultralight trike run by FlyTrike was an exhilarating escape from the ordinary for some of the participants.
For the MND patients who often face mobility challenges, being airborne offered a rare sense of liberation.
As the wheels lifted off the ground, some described feelings of “weightlessness”.
Many expressed overwhelming joy and gratitude, adding that it felt like “flying above life’s difficulties”.
The rush of wind against their faces and the sweeping bird’s-eye view below sparked emotions ranging from awe to profound peace.
One participant said: “This is the first time I’ve seen the whole of Taiping from the air.”
Taking part in something so physically demanding yet rewarding gave them a renewed sense of accomplishment.
Another participant said she felt “so normal”, despite her legs being immobile.
Taking the event outside of the Klang Valley was also a significant step towards decentralising MND initiatives, the association said, and demonstrated its dedication to reaching individuals and families affected by MND across Malaysia.
Pertubuhan Wanita Khas Ikhlas Taiping (PWITP) president Toh Puan Datin Seri Norisha Abdul Rahman was guest of honour while also present was Taiping Tourism Association deputy president Kamariah Md Yusop.
