With 15 years of experience in making ketupat palas, a housewife from Kampung Penghulu Jaafar in Beseri of Padang Besar in Perlis is earning a lucrative income during festive seasons.
Nor Azliza Bidin, 42, said this Hari Raya, she made over 150kg of ketupat palas (glutinous rice dumplings in triangular-shaped pouches).
“The ketupat recipe was from my mother, who sold ketupat for the past 25 years. I am keeping her legacy alive,” she told Bernama.
“I prepare the ketupat as my mother did, to preserve its rich, authentic flavour.”
Nor Azliza said she also makes ketupat jagung (corn), ketupat hitam (black glutinous rice), ketupat kacang (peanut) and ketupat serunding (meat floss) besides frozen ketupat, priced between RM26 and RM30 per kilogramme.
“I am assisted by two workers, who are close relatives, as my ketupat palas orders come in throughout the year.
“I also receive orders from customers outside the state, from as far as Johor and Kuala Lumpur.”
Nor Azliza said she promoted her ketupat online, adding that her regular customers usually ordered more than 25kg of ketupat each during festive seasons.
A loyal customer who wished to be known only as Wan Shafinas, 37, said the rich, creamy taste of the ketupat made by Nor Azliza reminded her of those her grandmother used to make.
