EFFORTS to upgrade Ipoh roads are continuing, a Ipoh City Council spokesman says.
The spokesman said a future upgrading project for Jalan Medan Ipoh 6 would include more parking spaces and road resurfacing works to address uneven surfaces.
He was speaking to StarMetro following a ceremony to hand over upgrading works on Jalan Medan Ipoh 2, Bandar Baru Medan to the city council earlier this month.
“Resurfacing works have also begun on seven other roads in the Medan Ipoh area, covering a total of 3.125km at a cost of RM1.37mil,” he added.
The roads are Jalan Medan Ipoh Service Road 2, Jalan Medan Ipoh 1, Jalan Medan Ipoh 11, Jalan Medan Ipoh 6 Service Road, Jalan Medan Ipoh 6, Jalan Medan Ipoh 6 Service Road 1 and Lebuh Medan.
The upgrade of Jalan Medan Ipoh 2 in the Perak capital cost about RM478,000, with funds approved by Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT) in 2024.
Enhancements to the 710m-long road included widening, resurfacing, reorganising bays to eliminate illegal roadside parking, and upgrading the streetlights to energy- efficient light-emitting diodes (LEDs).
Prior to the upgrade, numerous complaints were lodged with MBI about potholes that were safety hazards for road users, water pooling during heavy rain, shortage of parking, and inefficient traffic flow management systems.
The ministry had also allocated a further RM483,197 to upgrade 259 streetlights in Medan Ipoh and Jalan Burung Belibis into LED, said the MBI spokesman.
He said it would reduce the risk of road accidents caused by potholes and stimulate economic and social activities in the Medan Ipoh commercial zone, ultimately benefitting residents and the wider Ipoh community.
Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming, who was also present at project handover ceremony, said Medan Ipoh was one of the city’s key commercial zones and a popular tourist destination.
In a Bernama report, he said the upgrades were in preparation for Visit Malaysia 2026 and that the ministry approved the additional funding to enhance infrastructure and improve accessibility.
“The last resurfacing work in Medan Ipoh was done more than 15 years ago,” he said.
He added that the upgrades to the seven roads were expected to be completed by July.
