Kulai council’s low-carbon moves bearing fruit in municipality

Kulai Municipal Council (MPKu) has removed more than 60,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) through its low-carbon initiatives last year, says council president Mohd Fahmi Salam (pic).

These efforts have helped the local council significantly reduce its carbon footprint.

He said: “Last year, we managed to reduce 14,060 tonnes of CO2 while also achieving carbon absorption of 60 tonnes.

“To put this into perspective, it is equivalent to handling about 15,000cu m of rubbish or reducing the usage of 208,006 vehicles annually.”

MPKu’s achievements have earned it recognition.

“We received the Low-Carbon Town Award for Kulai Town Centre Zone in Indahpura, where we reduced over 13,000 tonnes of CO2.

“We were also honoured with the Low-Carbon Strategic Partner Award,” he said at the council full board meeting.

In a separate development, MPKu has launched the Smart and Sustainable City initiative in Bandar Putra and Indahpura.

“We will focus on smart traffic monitoring system, zero potholes, zero rubbish and zero faulty traffic lights,” said Mohd Fahmi.

“I hope this initiative will serve as a stepping stone towards creating a sustainable, technology-friendly town,” he said.
