A SECTION of Petaling Street in Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown has been cordoned off for upgrading and beautification for Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026).

The project includes replacing the roof over Petaling Street, reorganising existing electrical cables, installing electricity meters for each stall and repainting the column supporting the roof.

It will be done in six phases and is scheduled for completion by Oct 11.

The barricaded area, near the Petaling Street arch along Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, affects 40 stalls selling mainly souvenirs, clothing, shoes and leather goods.

Affected traders will need to cease operations for more than a month until the first phase of the project is completed by April 22.

Bukit Bintang MP Fong Kui Lun’s aide Lee Bing Hong said he was informed by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) that the work progress would also depend on weather conditions.

“Hawkers will take turns to close their stalls in six phases, with each phase expected to last around four to five weeks.

“DBKL will provide advance notice to affected traders,” he said.

On March 16, part of the entrance was closed off with red and white plastic barriers for the first phase of the project.

Kuala Lumpur Hawkers and Petty Traders Association chairman Datuk Seri Ang Say Tee said 483 out of 773 traders along Petaling Street were affected.

“However, traders operating along Jalan Hang Lekir and the back lanes are not affected.

“Throughout this period, Petaling Street remains open as traders will take turns to close according to the construction phase.

“I have asked the contractors to erect signs in Malay, English and Chinese on the upgrading works,” he said during a site visit.

Ang also said the association would request that DBKL waive the RM200 monthly service charge, which includes utilities and cleaning fees, for affected traders.

According to DBKL’s project timeline, the second phase of works will commence on April 23 while the third phase will start on May 28.
