Free lounge for Melaka p-hailing workers

THE Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB) has established a p-hailing lounge at Dataran Pahlawan.

Mayor Datuk Shadan Othman said delivery workers could use the facility to take a breather while waiting for food or parcels to be ready.

He said the lounge, equipped with air conditioning, sofas, prayer area and restroom, could be used free of charge by about 300 delivery service workers operating in the area.

“The p-hailing lounge was established to provide a more comfortable space for delivery workers rather than having them wait for orders by the roadside or at bus stops,” he said, Bernama reported.

The initiative, Shadan said, was part of MBMB’s efforts to assist and facilitate the delivery operations of p-hailing workers.

He was speaking to reporters after an iftar event, in conjunction with MBMB’s 22nd anniversary, at the Proclamation of Independence Memorial in Banda Hilir.

Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh, who was also present at the event, said more lounges would be opened in several locations.

“There may be three more locations where we will establish p-hailing lounges, depending on the needs and suitability,” Ab Rauf said, adding that the initiative reflected the state government’s concern for p-hailing workers and was a token of appreciation for their contribution to Melaka’s economy.

More than 1,000 people attended the iftar programme to enjoy a variety of free food and beverages.

At the event, MBMB also presented more than RM8,000 to four state trishaw associations and RM4,000 to Persatuan Rakan Penghantar Melaka and Rumah Akhlak Bukit Baru.
