FORTY children living in the Palma low-cost flats in Bandar Botanic, Klang in Selangor, and in its vicinity were presented with free spectacles.
The initiative was a joint collaboration between the One Community Social, Moral and Educational Organisation (OCO) and the Lions Club of Subang Jaya.
Prior to the presentation at the One Community Lions Learning Centre in Palma, OCO founder Elan Perumal said the Lions Club conducted free vision tests for more than 50 children.
The children were in dire need as their parents were unable to get them spectacles.
Some were using glasses that no longer suited their vision needs.
“We are happy that the initiative by the Lions Club of Subang Jaya is helping these kids, especially those who were struggling to read due to their poor vision,” he said.
Lions Club of Subang Jaya president Leong Jia Hui said, “We are happy to work with OCO that was able to help so many children who were in need of eye aid.”
Vision project coordinator and optometrist Fung Zhi Deng said some of the recipients badly needed glasses and expressed his hope that with their new spectacles, they would be able to do better in school and in their daily lives.
“I saw a lot of big smiles among the children. The new pair of spectacles will also help to raise their level of confidence too,” said Fung.
Elan said the children at the centre were also visited by the members of Leo Club of Metro Methodist College Kuala Lumpur who conducted games and art and crafts events.
OCO offers weekly free literacy classes for underprivileged children from the area.
