AMPANG in Selangor now has its own Senior Citizens Activity Centre (Pawe) at Kampung Melayu Tambahan Ampang community hall.

“Pawe is one of the efforts of the Madani government towards dignified ageing, in a healthy, happy manner with good quality of life,” Selangor women empowerment and welfare committee chairman Anfaal Saari said in a media statement.

“The establishment of Pawe helps to address the issue of social isolation among the elderly, which is a risk for them to develop conditions such as depression that can contribute to the onset of dementia.”

Anfaal launched Pawe Ampang.

Also present were Ampang MP Rodziah Ismail, Bukit Antarabangsa assemblyman Mohd Kamri Kamaruddin, Selangor Welfare Department director Azmir Kassim, Ampang Jaya Municipal Council deputy president Hasrolnizam Shaari and Pawe Ampang chairman Salwa Yunus.

“The success of Pawe’s opening is the result of close collaboration between various parties, including government agencies, non-governmental organisations and the local community,” said Anfaal, who is also Taman Templer assemblyman.

She said activities planned for Pawe Ampang included recreational activities and exercise to maintain members’ physical health.

There will be workshops and classes to empower the elderly with knowledge and skills, health talks and regular check-ups to raise awareness about physical and mental health, counselling sessions and psychosocial support to assist the elderly as well as intergenerational interaction programmes.
